The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) today condemned the cold-blooded assassination of a journalist in Mogadishu yesterday evening.

On Tuesday evening, 8 September 2015, two men armed with pistols followed journalist Abdullahi Ali Hussein, nicknamed Aano Geel, from the mosque after night prayer and shot him 4 times in the head and chest near his home in Dharkenley district in southwest Mogadishu, according to a witness and his family. Hussein died on the spot and killers escaped from the crime scene.

"We mourn the death of Abdullahi Ali Hussein and we share the grief of his family. This murder is a chilling reminder of the terrible life-threatening risk facing journalists in our country. We demand that there is an urgent and full investigation and that the killers are brought to justice,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General.

Abdullahi Ali Hussein, fourth journalist to be murdered in Somalia since start of this year, was the English editor of Waagacusub news website and sports reporter. Hussein who is a well-known journalist received previously life-threatening message and calls, due to critical reports on terrorism published by Waagacusub and other websites.

Journalist Abdullahi Ali Hussein is the fourth journalist to be murdered in Somalia since start of this year. A wife survives him. Most of journalists killed in Mogadishu were murdered in Dharkenley and Wadajir districts, formerly known Madina district.

NUSOJ is a national union representing Somali journalists to promote and protect freedom of the press and the interests and rights of journalists. It is a member of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), International Freedom of Expression exchange (IFEX), African Freedom of Expression Exchange (AFEX), Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and Eastern Africa Journalists Association (EAJA). NUSOJ is partner with Reporters without Borders (RWB).
