On Friday 2 October 2015, the National Security and Intelligence Agency (NISA) arrested two Universal TV journalists, Awil Dahir Salad - senior producer and TV show host – and Abdullahi Hersi Kulmiye - Universal TV Eastern Africa Director. In the Friday evening, NISA closed down Universal TV office in Mogadishu. Universal TV is a London-based TV.
On 30 September 2015, Universal TV broadcasted a TV debate moderated by Awil Dahir Salad with two parliamentarians, Honourable Mohamed Abdi Yusuf and Honourable Abdi Hashi Abdullahi. The MPs talked about the impeachment motion submitted by some MPs and the presence of Ethiopian forces in Somalia. The two journalists are currently detained at NISA’s Godka Jilacow detention centre.
NUSOJ believes that the arrests of the journalists and closure of the office of Universal TV is in retaliation for the TV debate hosted by Salad and broadcasted by the Television Network. Universal TV journalists told NUSOJ that Banadir Regional Court did not grant the security authorities the time to detain journalists for further investigations because the two journalists were not brought before judge.
"The acts of arresting Awil Dahir Salad and Abdullahi Hersi Kulmiye, and the closure of Universal TV office in Mogadishu are appalling and intolerable. Targeting journalists for hosting and airing a TV debate is totally unacceptable and proves the level of repression that we have been talking about,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General.
NUSOJ urges the Federal Government to abide by constitutional obligations to respect the right to free speech and media freedom, and allow the fundamental democratic rights of journalists and let a free and independent media operate in Somalia.
"These illegal and oppressive measures by the government must not continue, and Universal TV journalists must be allowed to continue their work independently, without fear, intimidation or abuse," Osman said.
