ICJ to rule on border dispute between Kenya and Somalia

Kenya awaits with bated breath to know its fate regarding the disputed lucrative triangular stretch of 100,000 square Kilometers of off shore territory after Somalia filed a case at the international court of justice over its maritime border. Attorney General Professor Githu Muigai who is leading a high powered delegation has already traveled to the hague based court in the netherlands to defend Kenya's Maritime border. Depending on how the ruling turns out, Kenya either stands to gain a lot in terms of the rich minerals such as oil and gas believed to be contained in the vast area, or lose it all if the court re-draws the border towards the South East as per Somalia's assertions.

Galmudug President voted out of office by state Parliament

The President of Somalia's Galmudug state, Abdikarim Husain Guled has lost no-confidence vote at the state Parliament on Tuesday, after MPs criticized him of poor leadership, Garowe Online reports. Announcing the results, first Deputy Speaker, Ali Hared Ali said that 54 parliamentarians have voted for the impeachment motion against Guled, during a show of hands ballot. The parliamentary session carried out in the absence of the President and Parliament Speaker, whereas all MPs agreed to carry out the no-confidence vote, added Ali However, Galmudug Vice President, Mohamed Hashi Araby is set to take over power according to the state constitution, as the Parliament is expected to deliberate sessions to elect new President for the state. President Guled elected back in 2015 as the head of interim Glamudug administration, and is accused of incompetence and frequent absence from the region. The Parliament noted it considering tabling a similar motion against the Parliament Speaker Ali Ga'al Asir.

Despite threats and warning, Somalia held its first ever interregional all-girls basketball tournament which ended on Monday with Banaadir region crowned champions. Hundreds of Somali basketball lovers gathered in the northeastern Somalia town of Garoowe in the Puntland state to watch the finale which saw Banaadir ladies stump the ladies from Hirshabelle state by 66-46. The tournament was a success after the governor of the host region, Omar Abdullahi Osman, downplayed warnings by the Somali Religious Council which said the tournament violates Islamic law, local media Hiiraan reported. "We warn that the women basketball violates the Islamic law, culture and its values, and it is a place where women can be easily corrupted. Women should know that they are susceptible to the enemy of Islam, and that youth in particular is the target for those who want to change your Islamic values," the chairman of the council, Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Salat, was quoted by VOA Somali. The governor however explained that the games offer Somali women a platform to exhibit their talents as it is done in many Islamic countries. Basketball is a popular sport in Somalia and has produced laurels for the country including Farhiya Abdi, a Swedish-born Somali professional WNBA player with the Los Angeles Sparks who is a role model for many Somali girls.
