Sharon Gray, a 30-year-old plant biology fellow, died near the capital city Addis Abada during the dangerous demonstration, UC Davis said.
Violent protests from anti-government activists have raged there in the past week, and at least 55 people died in a stampede during a demonstration over the weekend.
Gray had traveled to Ethiopia for a meeting relating to research she was conducting with the Netherlands Institute of Ecology. She is the first American identified as a victim of the violent demonstrations over the past week.
"Even in tragedy, we hope that we all can find some comfort in the wonderful work Sharon was engaged in that will better the lives of so many around the world,” Ken Burtis, UC Davis’ acting provost, said in a statement on Facebook.
Another member of UC Davis’ plant biology department was with Gray, but not injured, the school said.
The university created a memorial page for Gray, featuring dozens of photos of her around the world.
Gray earned her bachelor’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and joined UC Davis in 2013. Her husband is a university employee, according to the Sacramento Bee.
