It seems nobody cares about the complaints of the VOA Somali Service reporters because it is very hard to be held accountable for the editor's mistreatment towards his employees.
The basic monthly salary of a VOA Somali service reporter is 400.00 U.S dollar, which is considerably low when we compare it to the great expenses of an average Somali family that looks after more than 6 children.
" Every 5 months he sends us 3 month's salary,when we ask him what happens to the other two months' salaries .His reply to that question has always been , there is a shortage of money," said a VOA Somali reporter , who spoke to Waagacusub Media on condition of anonymity.
Despite this hardship, Abdirahman Yabarow, VOA Somali editor, withholds the salary of the VOA Somali reporters in Somalia, Kenya,Uganda,Djibouti and Yemen.
" We sometimes wait 4 months to get our salary.We never complain about it for fear of losing the job," said a VOA Somali Service reporter , who reached Waagacusub Media.
" The editor forced us to have foreign accounts to transfer our salaries because he said that he could not able to transfer money through Dahabshil Company, which he used to send to. And we occasionally travel to Kenya with limited resources," said another reporter, requesting anonymity.
The complaints come at the same time as many reporters left the VOA Somali Service, following mistreatment, nepotism, and tribalism from the editor.
VOA Somali Service started as a just a hope but eventually became less interested due to its partiality and hiding the truth.
