Hindiyo Haji Mohamed, a journalist for government controlled Radio Mogadishu and Somali National TV, died this afternoon after she sustained serious injuries when her when an explosive device placed under her vehicle exploded around Mogadishu’s KM4 junction, according to security officials at the scene and fellow colleagues. A pedestrian walking near where the journalist was driving was also seriously wounded.
"We all mourn this disastrous assassination of Hindiyo Haji Mohamed which is another reminder of the risks Somali journalists continue to face regularly. This was targeted killing, deliberately meant to eliminate Hindiyo. Those who deliberately seek to harm unsuspecting members of the public, including journalists, need to be condemned and hunted down to answer for their actions," said Bile Gurhan, CMD Chairman.
CMD sends sincere condolences to the friends and family of Hindiyo Haji Mohamed, the first female journalist killed in Somalia in the past five years and is the sixth journalist murdered in Somalia in this year.
Hindiyo Haji Mohamed, 27, was returning from Somali International University (SIU) at the time of the explosion where she has been studying. She is the widow of another journalist Liban Ali Nur who was murdered on 20 September 2012 in Mogadishu. Hindiyo was a single mother of 7 children. Nur also used to work for SNTV.
