For a second, I was really excited and thought it was an opportunity for me to give back to my country and share my experience from living life abroad with my fellow local Somali youth. I shared the news with a friend of mine, but after discussing it at length with my friend I changed my mind about the invitation. Looking back after what has transpired in the last few days on Social Media I feel I made the right decision. Since it seems to me that the local youth were for the most part disregarded.
There were also many reasons that lead me to reject the invitation originally in the most respectful manner.
1. I wasn’t born in Somalia plus haven’t spent much time to understand the struggle the local youth Somalia been through fully.
2. I believed the local Somali young people can bring either the same or even better ideas to the table than I would since they are the residence of Somalia, (not to mention that these young people were born and raised in Somalia for God sake.)
3. I am a citizen of the United States, which means I will spend less time in Mogadishu and will come back to the United States proceed my comfortable life right after the conference concludes.
4. Just because I am a Somalia diaspora, I don’t think I deserve to take the seat of my fellow Somali youth who have seen and encountered struggle in the first-hand experience.
5. The budget that was intended to be spent on my expenses during my stay in Mogadishu throughout the conference could’ve been invested into something that the locals and the youth will avail from.
6. I discerned that this kind of antagonistic situations creates animosity between the diaspora and the locals, which won’t help the Somalis from all over the world to work together and collectively on the issues that matter to us as the Somali youth.
7. Last but not least, I didn’t want the local Somali youth to think that because I am Somali diaspora, I somehow have better advantages than they do. I didn’t want them to believe that I am smarter, better, and more influential than they are. There are some very talented & brilliant visionaries and more prominent local Somali youth than
In conclusion, I am not here to criticize or go after those organizing the conference nor those who are partaking in the conference, but to respectfully voice my opinion on the overall situation.
We’ve had so much instability in the past with our older generations fighting over power and their separate "Visions” for leading our Country, and now to have our Youth become divided will only hurt us in the long run. Today it’s disagreeing over how to run a Conference tomorrow we could become the new Warlords that stand in the way of Peace for the next generation.
I hope the youth come together and put their differences aside with a united front before it is too late. At the end of the day, we all want what is better for Somalia and that is to enable each other as fellow youth because WE ARE THE FUTURE.

Western Intelligence Agencies Oppose the Democratization of Somalia Intelligence Services (NISA) History documents the strong character of the Somali people associated with messy democratic rule that cherishes individual liberty, freedom of expression and opinion, Justice, and private entrepreneurship rather than with autocratic rule. British explorer, Sir Richard Burton wrote in 1856, "the Somalis are fierce race of republicans, constantly changing political loyalties – the Somalis lived in what amounted to a state of chronic, political schizophrenia, verging on of anarchy. Every freeborn man holds equal to his ruler and allows no loyalties or prerogatives to abridge his birthright of liberty." Why I side with Local Somali Youth
A few weeks ago, I received an invitation to partake the National Youth Conference that is going to take place in the capital city of Somalia, Mogadishu.
