The first attack on Khaatumo State was on the 15th of January, while the Maakhir and Khaatumo State conference was underway to merge both states. The Khaatumo State forces had vacated BalliCad peacefully, to the outskirts of BalliCad town, to avoid civilian casualties. However on the 18th of January Somaliland attacked Khaatumo forces on the outskirts of BalliCad but was repelled. The attack on Ballicad has led to displacement. The offensive launched by Somaliland on Khaatumo State, is putting pressure on its security forces to act. No condemnation has been made by the UN, that largely funds the Isaaq militias of Somaliland.
The persistent attacks by Somaliland has endangered the Khaatumo and Maakhir conference organized by Khaatumo State, the MPs of the Federal Government of Somalia, hailing form Maakhir and Khaatumo State, and the Civil Society of the Sool, Sanaag and Eastern Togdheer.
KDO media was able to have a phone interview with a Khaatumo official, the official had this to say; "Khaatumo State and Maakhir have acted as a mechanism for the local population to peacefully channel their grievances against the one-clan state of Somaliland dominated by the Isaaq and Puntland dominated by the Majeerteen, this has made them less susceptible to exploitation by extremists groups. We urge the International community to stop the aggression of Somaliland and Puntland on Khaatumo State".
