Press Release:Monday, December 9, 2013 Ogaden Youth and Student Union condemns the Ethiopian governments recent propaganda campaign aimed to mislead the international community and misrepresent the crisis taking place in the Ogaden.
The Ogaden remains to be in a dire humanitarian situation, over a million people have been internally displaced. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled to neighboring countries and regions, such as Somalia and Kenya. Tens of thousands of civilians have been arbitrarily arrested and many tortured and killed in military prisons and garrisons all over the region. The use of rape as a systematic weapon by military troops and the Liyuu militias continues in the Ogaden and has left tens of thousands of young women and girls displaced and terrorized.

Today the Ethiopian regime is hosting the8th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day in the city of Jigjiga which is the regional capital of Ogaden and home to the infamous Jail Ogaden military prison where thousands of people die each year due to torture, starvation and disease. The Ogaden remains under a brutal military occupation, however, in the recent months the situation in the Ogaden has worsened specially in the city of Jigjiga and its surroundings. A military blockade and curfew have been imposed upon the city, extra-judicial killings have taken place in the surrounding regions of Jigjgia, and thousands of people have been arbitrarily arrested and killed. The Ethiopian regimes recent and further subjugation and terrorization of the civilian population in the Ogaden is mainly due to the Ethiopian regimes recent propaganda campaignintended to mislead the international community and oil corporations, and thus why Jigjiga was specifically chosen by the regime to host this event.

OYSU condemns this false portrayal and propaganda, and calls on the Ethiopian regime to bring to an end the dire human rights violations and state sponsored terrorism committed by military troops and the infamous Liyuu militias. Theatrics and propaganda will not mislead the international community nor will it bring success in exploiting the oil and natural resources of the oppressed and subjugated Somali peoples of Ogaden.

Furthermore, OYSU calls upon the international community to take immediate action in the Ogaden and bring an end to the brutal military, humanitarian, economic and media blockade imposed upon the region since 2007. The situation in the Ogaden is by far one of the worse in Africa, millions of people continue to suffer under a brutal authoritarian regime in Ethiopia, and genocidal massacres have become the norm in the Ogaden. Also, we urge international human rights organizations investigate and speak out against these dire crimes against humanity taking place in the Ogaden. Finally, we call upon international humanitarian organizations such as the ICRC and Doctors Without Borders pressure the Ethiopian regime and the international community to gain back access into the Ogaden to provide much needed humanitarian assistance to the millions suffering in the region.

Ogaden Youth & Student Union is a youth-led international organization based in 24 countries around the world established to educate, advocate and raise awareness to bring an end to the ignored and often hidden genocide taking place in the Ogaden.
