This is a press release concerning the unlawful arrest of political activists Ali Abdi Wardheere on the 26-05-2015 and 28-05-2015.
‘I am a member of the political opposition parties in Mogadisho who are against the failing political leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamuud (HSM). I have strived to highlight shortcomings in HSM doomed policy to Somali citizens and hold his government accountable, in a peaceful manner and in accordance with Articles 16: FREEDOM OF ASSOCIATION and article 18: FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION of the Somali constitution.
President HSM did not approve of my peaceful political activities and requested my presence at his office, which I obliged out of respect for the office and the country. Upon attending his office, he unfortunately verbally abused and threatened me in the presence of several Ministers who intervened on my behalf.
After this, on Tuesday the 26-05-2015, I was man handled, blindfolded and kidnapped by heavily armed soldiers on Makka Al-Mukaramma road. I was taken to a CID investigation unit in Villa Somalia, in close proximity to the Office of the President. I was later released without any explanation.
On 28-05-2015 I was called to attend the CID investigation unit in Villa Somalia were I was re- arrested, again without explanation. I was denied legal representation and threatened with physical violence.
As a victim of the unlawful aggression of President HSM, I want to share with the public and in particular Hon Members of Parliament, members of political parties, activists, civil society and elders, that this is a signal to us all, and we should resist attempts to curtail our freedom of expression. If President HSM and his relative, who used the security apparatus to deny me my constitutional rights are not held accountable for this, I am concerned that other citizens and politicians will not be able to exercise their constitutional rights, especially as we approach 2016.
Mr President, if you wish to use your position to oppress others who disagree with your political vision, it is a violation of the rights of citizens and disappointment for freedom of speech supporters everywhere.
Finally I wish to request that the Parliament of Somalia and human rights organisations, in particular Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, investigate this violation of my basic rights.
