After months of waiting, the long-anticipated wage proposal from Dutch media employers has finally arrived—and it has sparked widespread disappointment across the journalism sector.

During the fourth round of collective labor agreement (CAO) negotiations on November 4, employers presented their first salary offer, which unions, including the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ), described as "painfully inadequate.”

According to the NVJ, the offer shows a total lack of respect for the dedication, quality, and professionalism of journalists and media workers in the Netherlands.

"This proposal does not in any way reflect the value and hard work of employees in this sector,” said the NVJ negotiation team in a statement.

The NVJ, along with other labor unions, has expressed deep frustration over the slow pace of negotiations and the employers’ failure to recognize the rising cost of living, inflation, and workload pressure that media professionals face daily.

To keep members informed and engaged, the NVJ announced that it will hold a digital lunch session on Wednesday, November 12, to discuss the progress of the negotiations and gather feedback from journalists across the country.

The association urged all journalists to participate and voice their opinions, emphasizing that unity among media professionals is crucial in demanding fair pay and improved working conditions.

The NVJ continues to push for a realistic and dignified salary increase that acknowledges the essential role journalists play in Dutch democracy and public discourse.
