Law-enforcement officials say the suspects operated a distribution network that supplied these dangerous substances to buyers across the country, using online platforms and discreet home-delivery channels to conceal their activities.
Regulatory specialists from the Dutch Food and Consumer Safety Authority (NVWA) warn that illegal and counterfeit medicines can cause severe health complications, including organ failure, poisoning, and in some cases death. In this investigation, authorities believe that the unsafe medication may have contributed to the fatality in Voorburg.
Prosecutors argue that the defendants knowingly trafficked unlicensed medicines and profited from exploiting vulnerable people seeking cheap or easily accessible treatments.
The suspects are expected to appear in court as the Public Prosecution Service pursues charges related to public-health endangerment, illegal pharmaceutical trade and participation in a criminal organisation.
If convicted, they could face significant prison sentences and financial penalties.
