Several hundred people attended the demonstration, which included opposition to Dutch immigration and asylum policies.
According to Dutch police, the atmosphere became increasingly hostile when a section of the crowd turned against officers, threw fireworks, damaged property and continued wearing face coverings despite agreements made with organisers.
Police deployed the Mobiele Eenheid (ME), the Netherlands’ riot-control unit, and used a water cannon in an effort to restore public order.
Authorities cancelled a planned march through The Hague because of public-order disturbances, violence against police and the continued presence of protesters wearing face coverings.
When unrest continued at the Malieveld, the demonstration itself was terminated and an emergency order was issued.
Riot police subsequently moved protesters away from the Malieveld towards The Hague Central Station.
Police said 24 people were arrested, including suspects accused of failing to comply with the emergency order and possession of prohibited weapons.
Police said some participants used antisemitic slogans and gestures, which are now under further investigation.
Dutch Justice Minister David van Weel publicly condemned scenes involving Hitler salutes, antisemitic chants, violence against police and fireworks being thrown at riot officers.
Prime Minister Rob Jetten also condemned the violence, including what he described as far-right and antisemitic expressions and Hitler salutes.
The unrest also raised concerns about press safety.
Dutch police said several journalists were harassed by protesters during the demonstration. Police also said they were in contact with the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ) and a journalist who ended up in the water during the police operation.
Authorities stressed that journalists must be able to carry out their work safely and without intimidation.
The violence occurred almost exactly one year after serious disorder surrounding another anti-immigration demonstration at the Malieveld in The Hague.
