Cesar Amilcar Chavarria Padilla ­-- who was identified recently on a list of 30 men believed to be in Canada who are suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity -- is in custody after he surrendered himself to authorities in Toronto on Tuesday, the Canada Border Services Agency said.

"The very fact that this individual chose to surrender himself into CBSA custody illustrates how effective this approach has been," Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said in a statement Wednesday. "These suspected war criminals are feeling the pressure of having their names and faces known to Canadians."

The 57-year-old is originally from Guatemala but little else is known about the latest wanted man to be taken into custody.

Exactly what he's accused of doing remains a mystery.

The feds launched a web site two weeks ago with the names and photos of 30 suspected war criminals thought to be hiding out in Canada and urged citizens to come forward with information on their whereabouts.

The wanted individuals have all been denied refugee claims on "reasonable grounds," the government has said.

The decision to go public with the list of suspected war criminals has been heavily debated over the last couple of weeks.

Since the faces of the wanted men appeared in newspapers across the country, six have now been found in Canada and arrested and a seventh was already in custody in a U.S. prison.

Two of the suspected war criminals have already been deported.

Manuel De La Torre Herrera, 57, was sent packing back to Peru and Cristobal Gonzalez-Ramirez, 44, was returned to Honduras.

A seventh man, 43-year-old Sri Lankan boxer Illandaridevage Kulatung, was located in a detention centre in Florida.
