Sana’a- An independent journalist has called on the international community to help his Ogadeni refugees and asylum-seekers that are stranded in Yemen.
Somali refugees can escape to their home town or have an option to stay in camps in Puntland and Somaliland but Ogadeni refugees and asylum-seekers have no option rather than staying in Yemen which is very dangerous at the same time their only option to avoid imprisonment and, possibly execution.
Ahmed Abdi, an Ogadeni independent journalist based in Yemen urged on Sunday the international community "to help his Ogadeni refugees and asylum-seekers that are stranded in Yemen.
Abdi ,who received a death threat from an Ethiopian official’s Facebook account in mid-march published on the statement on his Facebook account. ” The UN Refugee Agency has no plan for my people who sought sanctuary in Yemen and they have already said sorry we could not help you out.”
The Ogadeni community in Sana’a numbers approximately 2,500, of whom 1850 are registered with the UNHCR. Around 100 families from the Ogaden live in Al-Kharaz Refugees in the South of Yemen, registered with the UN as refugees from Somalia.
The Ogadeni communities have lived in Yemen since 2007 and most of them are single-parents that work as maidservants to take care of their families but recent weeks lost their jobs following after most of workplaces shut down due to the airstrikes and people holed up in their homes.
The electricity supply was cut off much of the country including Sana’a and the chance of getting diesel fuel for the generators-only those could afford- is very limited. People light candles to cope with the darkness of their rooms.
Those able to flee bombing raids sought shelter from their fellow Ogadeni families that were not resided in the targeted locations which increased the burden to those already suffering shortage of water, food and space.
” I don’t know how these people will survive if they don’t meet their basic needs”, said the journalist.
More than 200,000 Refugees and Asylum-seekers from Horn of Africa trapped in Yemen.
