According to information released by Solda Safety Network, nearly 567,000 students in Mogadishu have been left without access to education after thousands of families were displaced during demolition operations across the Somali capital.

Deadly Midnight Operation in Dayniile

At least 11 civilians were killed and 19 others injured after Somali Police and National Intelligence forces reportedly carried out a late-night raid in the Warlaliska area of Dayniile district.

Residents said heavily armed forces entered the area shortly after midnight during an operation linked to land disputes and forced removals. Witnesses reported that many of the victims were women and children who were sleeping inside their homes when bullets struck residential houses.

Local residents accused security forces of using excessive force during the operation.

Hundreds of Thousands Affected by Evictions

Human rights activists estimate that close to 800,000 families in Mogadishu have been affected by demolitions and forced displacement campaigns allegedly carried out under the authority of the federal government.

Many displaced residents reportedly possessed legal ownership documents for their homes and land, raising serious concerns over unlawful land seizures and corruption.

Among those reportedly displaced are:

• A Somali woman known as Ijaabo, whose image appears on Somali shilling currency
• A well-known maternity doctor from Shibis district, Dr. Habibo Abdi Halane
• A blind mosque imam who reportedly served a mosque in Shibis for 47 years

Residents claim that some families were pressured to pay up to $20,000 in order to prevent demolitions, while other properties were allegedly transferred to businessmen in Muqdisho.

Children and Women Facing Severe Hardship

Aid workers and community leaders warn that women and children have suffered the most from the crisis, particularly as Somalia continues to struggle with drought, hunger, displacement, and heavy seasonal rains.

The destruction of homes has reportedly forced hundreds of thousands of children out of school, worsening an already fragile humanitarian situation.

Human Rights Groups Raise Alarm

Independent Somali human rights organizations have also expressed concern over alleged abuses committed during recent crackdowns.

Following visits to detention centers, rights groups reported that young protesters arrested after demonstrations against the demolitions were subjected to mistreatment and unlawful detention.

The developments have intensified concerns about shrinking political freedoms and the growing use of force against civilians and opposition voices.

Corruption Allegations

Investigations linked to land transactions in Muqdisho allegedly uncovered corruption worth more than $467 million, according to findings connected to property registration and notary offices operating in the capital.

Additional allegations involve leaked banking documents reportedly obtained by Sunatimes News Agency, allegedly showing a senior police official receiving more than $16 million through suspicious financial transactions.

The Somali federal government has not publicly addressed the allegations in detail.

Political Tensions Escalate

The crisis has further intensified after Somalia’s Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi threatened opposition groups planning demonstrations in Muqdisho on 4 June 2026.

Opposition leaders accuse President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of unlawfully extending his mandate after his official term allegedly expired on 15 May 2026.

Videos circulating on social media reportedly show the president previously stating that he would not seek a term extension. Opposition groups and members of both houses of parliament now argue that the extension lacks legal legitimacy.

International Silence Questioned

The worsening situation has also raised questions regarding the role of international donors supporting Somalia’s federal institutions.

Somalia’s government and security forces receive substantial financial support from international partners including the European Union, United Kingdom, United States, United Nations, and the World Bank.

Critics and civil society groups are now questioning why international actors have remained largely silent over allegations of forced displacement, human rights abuses, and large-scale land seizures affecting civilians in Muqdisho.
