Court officials stated that during his tenure in the Bay and Bakool regions, Abu Abbas worked closely with Ahmed Diriye (Abu Ubaidah), the current emir of al-Shabaab, who at that time was the group’s governor (Waalli) in those regions. The prosecution further alleges that Abu Abbas later became a member of the Shura Council, participated in collection of Zakat, and was considered a close confidant of Abu Ubaidah.
Abu Abbas was subsequently appointed Waalli of the Middle Shabelle region, a role he held until late 2022, when combined government and local forces recaptured most of the region. He fled north during the offensive but was captured in August 2024 as he attempted to covertly reenter the Bay region, where government troops were isolating al-Shabaab militants in central Somalia.
During the opening hearing, Abu Abbas did not deny his membership in al-Shabaab or his role as a regional governor for the group. However, he argued that he ceased all activities for the organization over the past three years. His defense team appealed to the court for leniency, requesting that he be placed in a rehabilitation and deradicalization program instead of receiving a punitive sentence.
The prosecution firmly rejected the plea, emphasizing the scale of the crimes and the strategic impact of the positions held by the defendant. They are seeking the death penalty.
Legal analysts note that the outcome of the case may set a precedent for future trials of high-ranking al-Shabaab operatives, especially those captured during ongoing military operations across southern and central Somalia.
The court is expected to continue hearing testimony and evidence in the coming days, with a final ruling anticipated once all submissions have been reviewed.
