We could say that we are "imaginatively challenged” - which means that we are unable to imagine an alternative future - in other words, we are prisoners of our mind.
For many Somalis, criticizing the status quo and the rampant corruption that is threatening our very existence is like rejecting predestination (qadar). When you have no way of imaging beyond your miserable situation all you have to do is make excuses and live the hope that things will improve gradually. Therefore, the suggestions of making sacrifices or implementation of key reforms are seen as disturbing the natural process. In the meantime nature will take care of all the negative elements including corruption and nepotism and robust institution will emerge in the end.
Having a clan biases, being indifferent on corruption and nepotism and partnering/supporting thieves of state are coping mechanism during this process. It is an attitude that says through time and divine intervention; we will create viable political institutions, be less tolerant on corruption; have less clan biases and become better Muslims and citizens. The saying goes "dowlad xuni waxay dhaantaa dowlad alaan.” The alternatives are not good government vs. bad one, but bad government and no government. According to this state of mind, critiquing leadership incompetence is tantamount to undermining the state.
