MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — Turkey is increasingly emerging as the dominant foreign diplomatic force in Somalia following the failure of political talks previously supported by the United States, the United Kingdom, and international partners, highlighting a major shift in influence inside Somalia's political landscape.

Negotiations between Somalia’s Federal Government and opposition political figures, held between May 13–15, ended without resolving key disputes surrounding the country’s political transition, electoral process, and national consensus.

Following the collapse of the talks, the United Nations Transitional Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) issued a statement expressing disappointment over the lack of progress.

In a statement released after the meetings, UNTMIS said:

"It is regrettable, however, that once again the dialogue concluded without resolving key disputes.”

The UN mission nevertheless welcomed the continuation of dialogue and urged Somali leaders to work toward a "practical and unifying” electoral model while calling for restraint and national unity amid growing political tensions.

UNTMIS also emphasized the importance of cooperation between Somali stakeholders and international partners during what it described as a critical transition period for the country.

However, while Western-backed mediation efforts struggled to deliver results, Turkey quickly moved to strengthen its diplomatic role in Mogadishu.

The Turkish Embassy in Somalia publicly announced a high-level meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud shortly after the negotiations failed, reaffirming Ankara’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and security.

In an official statement, the Turkish Embassy said:

"We were honored to be received by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. During the meeting, we reaffirmed our steadfast support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity, sovereignty, security, and prosperity.”

Political analysts say the statement carried strong diplomatic symbolism, particularly Turkey’s direct reaffirmation of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s legitimacy during a period of heightened political disagreement inside Somalia.

Sources familiar with the developments claim Turkey has also initiated contacts with opposition political groups following the failed talks, with discussions reportedly centered around creating a new dialogue framework under Turkish facilitation rather than Western sponsorship.

Observers in Mogadishu increasingly view Ankara as filling a political vacuum left by the unsuccessful mediation efforts associated with Washington and London.

Over the past decade, Turkey has dramatically expanded its influence in Somalia through military cooperation, infrastructure development, humanitarian projects, trade agreements, and strategic security partnerships. Ankara operates its largest overseas military training base in Mogadishu and remains deeply involved in Somalia’s security and economic sectors.

Regional analysts argue that Somalia has become an important geopolitical arena where global and regional powers compete for strategic influence linked to the Red Sea, maritime security, and emerging energy opportunities.

As Somalia enters another sensitive political phase, many observers believe Turkey is now positioning itself not merely as a partner, but as the principal external political actor capable of influencing future negotiations between the Federal Government and opposition leaders.
