Sharif described the arrest as part of a troubling pattern that undermines the rule of law and uses security forces for political ends.
Sharif said the detention illustrated how public institutions were turning against those who defend communal rights:
"We pay taxes; we raise families; we are not enemies of the state. Why are we being singled out?” asked one elder in Mogadishu.
He warned that the arrest damages the government’s standing, both domestically and internationally — especially given ongoing allegations of large-scale land appropriation in the capital.
Sharif Sheikh Ahmed urged the government to immediately free individuals being held without legal cause, citing the need to protect fundamental civil liberties and press freedom.
He called the arrest a "humanitarian crisis” in the making:
"This is not just a policy issue — this is a human issue… communities uprooted, voices silenced.”
With pressure mounting from civil society and international observers, the Somali government may yet face legal or diplomatic consequences if the arrest leads to further repression of community organizers or media actors. For now, the arrested elder remains in detention while fear and uncertainty intensify among Mogadishu’s civic voices.
