Today twenty-six (26) journalists operating in Dhusamareb and Guriel towns stopped reporting on news and information after Ahlusuna Waljama armed religious group continued threats and censorship local journalists for reporting on news about activities of Galmudug Regional State. Ahlusuna Waljama barred journalists from reporting on news does not recognise.
"The intimidation and censorship imposed on journalists in Dhusamareb and Guriel towns illustrates a shameful attempt to quash coverage of news worthy happenings” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General. "Every citizen has a right to be informed about what is happening their regions and the conduct of the different political administrations.”
The journalists are mostly working for different radio stations and news websites inside and outside the country as reporters. Three of them were briefly arrested by Ahlusuna Waljama armed group for reporting on Galmudug elections.
"We call on Ahlusuna Waljama to reverse their decision by ending intimidations and censorship imposed on journalists so that journalists can perform their function of informing the society. At this critical juncture for the people in Central Somalia, local people and people in other parts of the country should all have access to every possible source of information and opinion without any restriction," added Osman.
