
In a collaboration led by Students and community leaders, volunteers from over 20 towns will work together to remove litter and debris, and beautify the Khatumo state and its parklands in one of the Somali’s largest one-day cleanup events! Volunteers will remove an estimated thousands tons of trash from sites throughout the Mountains of Sanaag, Valleys of Sool to forests of Cayn.
The Khatumo State Cleanup Day provides volunteers an opportunity to serve their communities and engage in stewardship of the cities and its parklands. This year, the Cleanup would provide a meaningful conclusion to Khatumo’s National Volunteer Week, which ran from May 11st to May 18th.
Since 1991, the SSC regions Cleaning Events Association have coordinated the Annual Day for Khatumo State Cleanup each May with a collaborative of other non-profit organizations. The Cleanup involves volunteers picking up trash at over 100 different cleanup sites along the Khatumo regions and its tributaries. Volunteers participate as part of more than 100 different neighborhoods, school, religious, and corporate groups, as well as individually. Khatumeets remove trash and debris (including Styrofoam cups, and plastic bags) located in the streets and on its cities at 100 sites along the 1080-mile region. At last year’s event, we estimate that we removed 50 tons of litter, making the Khatumo State cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful!. The Khatumo State Cleanup is organized by a collaborative of groups interested in keeping the region and our communities clean and healthy, including Khatumo State Unionist Association, Environmental Conservancy, and Khatumo State Department of Conservation and Recreation.

The project is being executed by a prominent Turkish construction company, whose team of experienced engineers has arrived in Hobyo to oversee and lead the implementation of the port development.
