NUSOJ firmly states that it has no partnership whatsoever with VIKES and this Finnish organisation is deliberately using a well-known fraudster who has stolen organisational identity of the union in order to misguide, misinform and destroy the collective voice of journalists which is respected and recognised by the journalists community worldwide, as led by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

Fraudulent Scam Using the Name of NUSOJ

26 August 2014

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) has been made aware of information being circulated through emails falsely stating that NUSOJ is in partnership with VIKES, an organization based in Finland. This so-called partnership between NUSOJ and VIKES is BOGUS.

Fake statements have been repeatedly circulated on this issue in the name of NUSOJ from emails imitating to be NUSOJ. These statements contain official-looking NUSOJ stationery, including NUSOJ emblem, or the name of a fictitious person purporting to act on NUSOJ’s behalf.

It should be clear to everyone that VIKES is using a well-known fraudster and imposter who runs a government project from the Ministry of Information in order to undermine the bone fide NUSOJ and independent voice of the media. The fraudster deceitfully uses the name of NUSOJ and VIKES is openly supporting identity theft.

NUSOJ condemns in strongest terms possible this fraudulent act supported by VIKES. This scam by VIKES, which allegedly sought to obtain money in name of supporting Somali media from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, is fraudulent.

The union understands very well the malice and motivation behind VIKES supporting such fraudulent activity. VIKES actions are purely driven by resentment and vengeance based on loss power within journalists’ community worldwide by Finland journalist union and its companions.

NUSOJ wishes to warn its members, Somali media fraternity, journalists’ community worldwide and any concerned party about these fraudulent activities being perpetrated purportedly in the name of the National Union of Somali Journalists. The union will take all possible actions to protect its organisational identity against fraudsters and conspirators, like VIKES.

For purposes of clarification, the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) is a proud member of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX), Eastern Africa Journalists Association (EAJA), Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and African Freedom of Expression Exchange (AFEX).
