The unlawful imprisonment of rape victims and reporters under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his administration is outrageous and unacceptable. Shabelle Media has so far taken the heavy burden of the government war on press freedom. Subjected to a forcefully removal from their premises, beatings, unlawful detention and seizure of equipment’s. The Federal Government further stepped up its war on press freedom when, a 19-year-old female reporter from Kasma Radio allegedly, was forced in to a car by gunpoint by two men believed to be members of Somalia National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) who then raped her. Reports of men wearing government uniforms committing violence against women in Somalia is nothing new, it is a report too often told that is ignored. President Mohamudand his administration are silencing press freedom by rape and unlawful detention, which is inexcusable. Somalia Federal Government is at war with those who dare speak up and report crimes committed by men wearing government uniforms. According to UN statistics, 70 percent of 1,700 females reported armed men wearing government uniforms raped them and an estimated third of the victims were under the age of 18.
We, Somali People's Party condemn the actions of President Mohamud and his administration and demand the immediate release of the rape victim and Shabelle Media reporters. The unlawfully detention is a direct violation to the Somali constitution. The continuous human right violation by President Mohamud and his administration is a serious concern. The United Nation and the international communities that support the minority government of President Mohamud have failed the Somali people, women in particular who account for more than 50 percent of the population. Sexual violence against woman and girls in war-torn Somalia is showing no pace of slowing down. The actions of President Mohamud and his administration is a direct warning to those who report sexual assault or rape, this is Mogadishu jungle law at its best.
We, Somali People's Party demand equal rights for women and justice for victims of sexual assaults and rape. We, appeal to the international communities, Human Rights and Women Group’s to speak up against the inhumane treatment of rape victims in Somalia. Somalia Federal Government is sending a wrong message to all women, that rape is not a crime.
