High level delegations from the region and over hundred diplomats have attended the commemoration of nationalities and People’s day that occurred in the administrative headquarter of zone five region, Jigjiga city in Ethiopia today.
President of Somali regional state, Abdi Mohamed Omar opened the occasion and thanked the guests invited to the nations’ day that his region is hosting today after long preparation to mark this days.
Prime minister of Ethiopia, HailaMarian Deselign also delivered speech at the colorful occasion and said it is a great day for whole Ethiopian people.
Minister of Information, Posts, Telecommunication and Transport of the Somali Federal Government, Abdullahi Elmoge Hersi, members of the Somali Federal Parliament, ministers and regional governors and elders were among the delegations attending the event in Jigjiga.
Puntland and Somaliland leaders were also invited there while Djiboutian President,Isma’il Omar Gelle delivered speech with Somali tongue there and praised the progress there in particular the Somali region according to reports.
There over 80 communities which live in Ethiopian including Somalia and each community will show its bets traditions
In a press conference he gave Friday, House Speaker Kassa Teklebirhan said high level officials, investors, speakers of regional councils, journalists and artists will visit various development activities being carried out in the State.
He said representatives of the governments of Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya Sudan and South Sudan are expected to take part in the celebrations. The Speaker said the visit will help prove that there are no challenges related to security and stability in the State, contrary to some reports.
He said the Day helped nations and nationalities of the country to get to know and respect each other.
Ethiopia in 2007decided to celebrate the Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Day annually on 9 December to honor the ratification of the national constitution and it is being celebrated since then.

A planned protest in Ethiopia's Oromia state has turned deadly. Scores have been killed after federal police and security forces opened fire on peaceful protesters, according to eyewitnesses and reports on social media. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets in more than 50 towns across Oromia early Saturday morning in what has been billed as a 'national day of rage' to protest the Oromo people's continued marginalization and human rights abuses in Ethiopia. The situation in the populous state, home to the Oromo people, remains tense and volatile.
