A high-level trade union delegation from Somalia, headed by Omar Faruk Osman, General Secretary of the Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) had arrived in Geneva, Switzerland to attend the 105th session of the International Labour Conference, which started this morning at the United Nations Palais de Nations and will continue until 10th June, under the banner, "Building a future with decent work".

As the ILO’s highest decision-making body, the trade union delegation will be participating plenary sittings and technical committees of the conference. The event will see the participation of government, employers’ and trade union representatives from 187 member states, who will discuss a series of work issues including global supply chains, decent work for peace, security and disaster resilience, as well as the impact of the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalisation. The delegates will also consider amendments to the Code of the Maritime Labour Convention and review the report of the Director-General on poverty.

The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), which is uniting autonomous and democratic trade unions representing 168 million workers in 155 countries, has today filed an objection against credentials of the delegation submitted by Somali government. ITUC indicted Federal Government of Somalia for violating ILO Constitution, accrediting unilaterally puppet persons in a tripartite delegation without consulting trade unions and for failing to implement ILO decisions concerning submission of properly constituted tripartite delegation as dictated by ILO rules.

ILO Credentials Committee is due to examine ITUC objection and will summon in this week Somali government to explain its breaches of ILO Constitution and accreditation of incomplete tripartite delegation to the 105th session of the International Labour Conference.

FESTU delegation, assisted trade union delegates from around world, will be articulating grave violations of trade union rights and lack of application and respect of ILO conventions by Somali Government. ILO Committee on Freedom of Association had already grilled Somali government delegation on freedom of association violations last Thursday.

"We note with appreciation the impressive work of the Governing Body around critical issues of priorities such as the one to ensure that the sanctity, integrity and relevance of the supervisory mechanism of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is preserved and strengthened” said FESTU General Secretary.

"The intensification of endemic poverty; bourgeoning unemployment, worst amongst youth who constitute the majority of the working people. Absence of social protection floors for more than two decades have combined to exacerbate the plight of the youth. The situation in Somalia is manifestly grave occasioned by Al Shabaab exploitation of the youthful population and demands global attention” told Omar Faruk at the ILO technical Committee on decent work for peace, security and disaster resilience.

The Somali trade union delegation has taken extra note of the robust and tireless efforts of the ILO Governing Body to ensure that the work and direction of the Committee on Application of Standards is neither truncated nor derailed by the acrimonious wrangling on the issue of the mandate of the Committee of Experts on the Application of Conventions and Recommendations with respect to the interpretation of ILO Convention 87.
